Durham Bulls Game!

On Saturday, thanks to Matt Nichols and his family, 1st Hunt took a trip to a Durham Bulls Game! We had a great time bonding with each other over Americas Favorite Passtime- Baseball. Another hall, 1st Royall, also went to the game so that was also a fun chance to get to interact with another hall. The Bulls were victorious over Norfolk, with a final score of 4-3 in what was a very enjoyable game to watch, with awesome weather too. Below are some pictures from the event and more can be found above in the slideshow!

IM Soccer! by Seth Templeton

On Tuesday, 8/21/2012, First Hunt had its first intramural soccer game of the season. Intramurals (IMs for short) are short games that are held throughout the week between halls on campus. As of right now there are soccer and Ultimate(fall sports) as well as basketball and volleyball (winter sports) IMs. At this first soccer game, First Hunt enjoyed the thrill of a very physically, mentally, and emotionally stimulating victory over 2nd East, our upstairs neighbors. With a final score of 2-1, our soccer IM team captains, Taylor Firn and Warren Zielke, led the hall to victory and kicked off the season with what looks to be a positive foreshadowing of our future success. MVP’s for this game include, but are not limited to, Jeffrey Phillips who did an outstanding job as our goalkeeper, and Jin Yoon who displayed real passion and determination throughout the entire game. However what truly makes an IM game is not victory, but hall participation and I am happy to say that the majority of our eligible “First Hunters” (people in 1st trimester varsity sports cannot participate) were there and showing support for the team!

Hall Food for Wednesday, 8/15 and 8/22

Last week, our very own Mike Newbauer provided the hall food for the hall. We had delicious chocolate cake and some good time to spend together! This week, HT Slaughter and his family graciously provided the hall with Krispy Kreme doughnuts! These were both great times to take a little break from our work and studying and to spend some time with the guys on hall! Thanks again to Mike and also the Slaughters!

NCSSM Sustainability Conference

On Monday, August 21, NCSSM had its kickoff for their Sustainability project that is serving as a major focus for the student government this year. As well as being very important to the school, NCSSM is also participating on a committee to implement sustainability practices throughout the North Carolina University System. The event started out with the keynote speaker, William Winner, Ph. D., talking to the students about what sustainability is and why it is so important. Then, there were many breakout sessions that the students attended to learn more about ares in sustainability that interested them. If you are interested in finding out more information about the conference and this event, including a list of all the breakout sessions, follow the link below.

T-Shirt Signing Dance

Every year, NCSSM holds a T-Shirt signing dance. All the students who want to participate gather in the PEC (Physical Education Center) wearing white shirts. People go around and simply sign other people's shirts. It is a great chance to meet new people and and creates an object that you can keep to remember the year. Throughout the event, there is a dance going on in the gym so people move in and out changing between dancing and signing shirts! It is a great event that many people remember as one of their most fond moments of the beginning of the year. Below is a picture of 1st Hunt as they prepared to go to the dance. More pictures can be seen on the slideshow at the top of the page.

One Act Play- by Burton Burrows (Drama Board member)

Every year the NCSSM Drama Board puts on the One Act play the first weekend after school starts. The One Act play, also known as the Year in Review, is the previous year’s three main stage plays compiled into a 30 minute production performed by the 6 Drama Board members. Last year’s plays were Once Upon a Midnight Dreary, the musical Hairspray, and the Shakespearean play A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. Instead of the typical play, the Drama Board presented each play in the form of a skit each representing different styles of acting. Once Upon a Midnight Dreary was done very quickly and interwoven with references to previous plays. The retelling of Hairspray was performed through an improvisational game called the Jazz Square of Death, where at least one actor on stage had to be doing a jazz square at all times. A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream was performed 3 times, each time decreasing the words an actor was allowed to use per sentence. The final performance was done with only one word. Overall the intentions of the One Act play were to showcase the previous year’s performances in a quick and entertaining way to get people interested in being a part of the plays a NCSSM.

1st Day of Classes and Convocation

On Tuesday, August 14 classes started for all Science and Math students. It was a very exciting, and for some confusing, day but it was a great one. The juniors finally got to see what was so great about the education they will be receiving here. That night, to officially start the school year, was the 33rd Convocation. We all heard a great speech from Dr. Kenneth Gibbs, who was a member of the NCSSM Class of 2001 and is now a Science and Technology Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It was a great ceremony and the reception afterwards was fun, with lots of pictures being taken to remember the special event. Below are a few snapshots from the event. More pictures can be found in the slideshow at the top of the page.

Hall Food Ideas

Every Wednesday on First Hunt, we have hall food. It is a great time for the guys on hall to spend time together and eat, which is all something we love to do. Since this is the first time that many of the parents have provided hall food, here are some ideas for what to bring:

Food/Snacks
- Pizza
- Sandwiches like Jimmy Johns or Subway
- Home cooked meals (spaghetti, hamburgers and hot dogs, etc.)
- Chips and salsa

Desserts
- Ice cream/ Ice cream sundaes
- Brownies
- Cookies
- Cake (great for around birthdays)

Other
- Fruit/Vegetable trays
- Sandwich bar

There are many ideas for hall food. If you think of something else, it would almost certainly be great. I will email you guys the Sunday before the date you're signed up for. We do have some guys on hall with dietary concerns and eating preferences so I will let you know that in the email as well. If you have any questions or concerns about this, feel free to email me at Riker13K@ncssm.edu.

Sister Hall Activities

Yesterday was a busy day. Along with our tour of some of the great places in Durham, we had an awesome time getting to know our sister hall, Reynolds 1E2E2D. We played some great games like In My Neighborhood and Squirrel Up a Tree. We also played a great game called Ride that Pony- always a favorite, especially with Mike and the RLAs. Later we had popsicles  and got to just hang out and play games like duck duck goose.

Here are some great pictures from the event.

Hall Programs: Tour of Ninth Street and Broad Street

Yesterday we had some great hall program. As a group, we took a trip down Broad St. and showed all the junior guys on hall some great places to go like Joe Van Gogh's and Dollar General. We then came back on 9th Street which has some great restaurants like Dane's, Bali Hai, and Elmo's, which is where we stopped for an early dinner. It was a great trip!

Important Phone Numbers

Here are some important phone numbers to know. To the guys on hall, it's a great idea to put these in your phone's contacts.

Bryan Front Desk- (919) 416-2825
Hunt SLI Office- (919) 416-2826
Security/Campus Resources- (919) 416-2711

Move In Day!

As you all know, junior move in day was on August 11th. It was a great day and we have a bunch of great new juniors on the hall. Today, August 13th, the seniors on hall that were not already on campus moved in. We now have a full hall of 35 guys! We are all looking forward to a great year! It's going to be awesome!

The Amazing SMath Race!

Every year, there is an event called the amazing SMath Race. It is a scavenger hunt for the juniors loosely based on the show The Amazing Race. For the second year in a row, the 1st Hunt Juniors won, along with the awesome sister hall, Reynolds 1E2E2D! For this, the halls will be receiving either s'mores or ice cream sundaes as a prize. This is just another great accomplishment for 1st Hunt!
