1st Trimester Exams!

Yesterday was the start of the 1st Trimester Exam Week. I wish everyone in 1st Hunt good luck on all their exams! You guys are great!

Push/Pull- An Original School Play by Burton Burrows

For the first time ever NCSSM has it’s own Theater Company. In past years theater has just been part of the NCSSM Fine Arts Series. This year however, the DramaBoard worked to create a theater company. This weekend the Promethean Players were proud to show their first production of their history and of the year, Push/Pull. Push/Pull is an original production written and developed by NCSSM students and Faculty. The play is performed through 7 pieces each showing different types of struggles that we go through during our lives, from the conflict between mother and father to nerves right before a big audition. It is very different from anything else the school has ever performed. The play was also received very well, and the student body really loved it! The NCSSM fine Arts Series is also proud to announce that this year’s winter Musical is going to be “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” The show dates are going to be February 2nd-4th.

Regionals for Cross Country

The NCSSM Cross Country Team is having great success. Today, the mens team took 1,2,3,5,7, and 11th and four of these competitors were from 1st Hunt! Chatham Ellwanger took 1st, Dayton Ellwanger got 2nd, Chris Panuski 3rd, and Mitch Reese-Jones 11th. Congratulations guys! Good luck at States!

1st Annual FUNDrun

Last week, the NCSSM Attachés put on the 1st ever FUNDrun. To raise money for the Annual Fund, the group sponsored a run around campus with obstacles increasing in difficulty, all culminating to the ultimate event, the Vermonster! For those of you who don't know what it is, its a massive serving of ice cream from Ben and Jerry's. Its ingredients are 20 scoops of ice cream, 4 bananas, 4 ladles of hot fudge, 3 chocolate chip cookies, 1 chocolate fudge brownie, 10 scoops of walnuts, 2 scoops each of 4 toppings of your choice, and whipped cream. The local Ben and Jerry's graciously donated a bunch of Vermonsters to the school for this run.It was an awesome event and we had a lot of competitors from first hunt participate. I participated as well as Taylor Firn, Harris Short, Vincent Cahill, Trey Faddis, Matt Nichols, Jeff Phillips, Matt Weaver, Dayton Ellwanger, and Chatham Ellwanger. Many of the teams dressed up for the run because there was a costume competition as well. My team, aling with Vincent and Harris won, dressed a Crayons! The pictures below are some snapshots of the event. Some more are in the slideshow.

Mens Soccer- by Harris Short

After tearing through the regular season with an undefeated record, the NCSSM Men’s Soccer Team approaches their final regular season home game on Wednesday, October 24th.  This game against Voyager Academy will be used as an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of the Seniors, including 1st Huntsmen Taylor Firn and Harris Short, as the team looks to defend their State Championship in the upcoming playoffs.  With the help of Junior Matt Nichols, the boys of 1st Hunt will be staying at school over trimester break to play in their first playoff game, the date of which is yet to be determined.  It should be an exciting couple of weeks as the team tries to repeat the State Championship going into the tournament as the number 1 seed!

Below are some awesome action shot picture from one of the recent soccer games.

IM Ultimate! by Seth Templeton

Throughout the IM Ultimate season, First Hunt has been defeated. We had some good games but none were as exciting as the most recent game. On Thursday the 18th First Hunt faced off against Fourth East in the semi-final Ultimate Intramural match. First Hunt took the field and saw a well fought but disappointing first half. We were neck and neck, occasionally one would have a 2 point lead but it would not last long. We fought to get back in the game and the second half brought with it a much needed improvement in our defense. A full game had gone by and we were tied up 8-8. “OVERTIME!” yelled coach Gonyeau, the IM director. Exhausted yet determined we valiantly and proudly strode onto the field. A short play later and we had scored again! We only had to hold our ground and take away their short opportunity to re-tie the game. Our solid defense prevailed yet again. We won the game 9-8 in overtime, putting First Hunt in the Ultimate Intramural Finals on Monday the 22nd against First Hill. If you recall First Hill is also the hall that we competed with in the soccer ultimate finals early this year, however this time we plan on emerging the victors!

NCSSM Fine Arts Performance

Last Sunday, the NCSSM Fine Arts department had the 1st Trimester Concert. Firts Hunt had some really talented performers in the concert. Jeff Phillips on the Tenor Sax, Edward Foyle on the Trombone, Chris Lagaly on the Flute, Nathan Kwon on the Cello, and me (Kyle) on the Trumpet. The performance was a great chance for all the fine arts groups to showcase all their hard work!

35¢ Wings

There is a restaurant down 9th Street here at NCSSM called Charlie's. Every monday, they have a speacial deal- all wings bought in increments of 10 for 35¢ each! As a new 1st Hunt tradition, Mike has started taking a group to Charlie's on monday nights to have wings together. I've gone once, and it is such a great time. One of the biggest catches though is that you can't take any food home! But for the guys on hall whose stomachs can match what their eyes see, the challenge is can be accepted! BElow are some pictures of the guys on hall at Charlie's, they really are enjoying themselves!

Defy Gravity!

This past weekend, First Hunt took a trip to the new Defy Gravity in Raleigh. Defy Gravity is a giant trampoline house that is one of the biggest attractions around! We had a great turn out and we had an awesome time hanging out together. This was one of the most anticipated programs that we've had. We went at night and got to also experience "Club Gravity" where all the lights in the house are turned out and the whole place glowed. THis was an awesome time and the guys had a ton of fun!

Here is a picture from the awesome event. More can be seen in the slideshow above.

Hall Olympics

Since this year was an Olympic year, the school put on an interhall competition called the Hall Olympics. The "games" consisted of creative activities like paint Twister, an artistic spin on the classic game, water balloon toss, and cookie stacking. Some other more common activites were dodgeball and tug-of-war. The games were a lot of fun and overall were scored on two aspects- hall placing and hall participation. I'm happy to say that 1st Hunt swept the competition and came out victorious winning the majority of the events and having an overall participation of 95%! We are all so proud to be a part of such an awesome hall community!

Athlete of the Week

This week's featured athlete is Jeffrey "Jeffles" Phillips! Click the picture below to learn about this awesome member of our hall.
