Service Learning Board First Step Project- Jeffery Phillips

Hey guys,
I am the service learning board representative for Hunt West. Could you please remind your hall that the First Step project is happening again for this extended. This is the program where the students are asked to bring in a small item from home for the charity. When we come back there will be a box in hunt lobby for them to put any items from this time or last time. Please remind them to put their names on the items. The list for this time is:
  • Gardening Gloves - preferably the kind with the plastic palm and cloth top
  • Hand Pruners - the bypass kind
  • Bug Spray
  • Large plastic storage bins with lids
  • Seeds - veggie & perennial flower packs
  • Hats - for volunteer gardeners to use, stray hats, baseball caps
  • Baskets to harvest
I know these might be expensive, but they are also able to donate any other gardening materials that might be cheaper.

Thanks!

Jeffrey Phillips

Pool Party

A huge shout out to the Phillips family for hosting 1st Hunt at their apartment for a pool party! This past Saturday, 1st Hunt had a pool party at Jeff Phillip's house. We were also joined by some girls from school who are good friends of Suzanne, Jeff's twin sister. The Phillips family graciously provided hot dogs and other snacks for us to enjoy throughout the day. This was an awesome time to hang out with the guys at the pool before it gets to cold! Below are some pictures and more can be found in the slideshow above!

Intramurals Update

As the Intramural Soccer season drew to a close, First Hunt was in the final match up against 1st Hill. This is one of the biggest rivalries on campus so we all knew it would be a great game. 1st Hunt fought extremely hard and captains Taylor Firn and Warren Zielke led the team well. By the end of regular play, the score was still 0-0. Unfortunately, 1st Hill won after taking Penalty Kicks, with a final score of 2-1. Although 1st Hunt did not win the IM Soccer championship, we still hold are heads high, and we are still in the lead for the IM Cup awarded at the end of the year. After IM Soccer came Ultimate Frisbee, which had its debut today, where 1st Hunt was victorious over 2nd Hill North with a final score of 13-4. Way to go 1st Hunt!

Latest from IM Soccer- Seth Templeton

First Hunt has continued a more than successful reign throughout Intramural soccer season with a total of 4 wins and 0 losses. We are the only undefeated team of the season in our bracket and we’re on our way to the semi-finals which is scheduled for Tuesday the 11th. If we defeat 4th West in the Semi-Finals then we are on to the Finals and if we win the Finals we become the official NCSSM IM Soccer Champions of 2012-1013. Wish us luck and cheer us on as Senior Captain Taylor Firn and Junior Captain Warren Zielke take the 1st Hunt team all the way to the end of a successful, victorious, and above all fun season!

Hall Program Update- by Harris Short

We've had quite a few programs happening on 1st Hunt this past week, the week of the 3rd.  There was an intense Sudoku race held in Annex on Tuesday night.  Jin Yoon emerged victorious but there were lots of competitors.  It was a well-liked program and we will definitely continue to have similar challenges of the mind in weeks to come.  Hall Food on Wednesday night was delicious as always! Chris Lagaly and his family provided it for the hall.  We made an awesome 1st Hunt flag on Thursday night in preparation for our upcoming IM soccer postseason matches. We also had a very highly attended Call of Duty tournament at midnight on Friday.  The boys really enjoyed participating in this program.  We all had a fun time playing and cheering each other on.  On Saturday, we got a projector and played the movie “21 Jump St.” on one of the Main walls while everyone lied around on the couches and floors to watch.  Finally, on Sunday, a couple of guys came out to go on a short walk on the Nature Trail.  It was perfect outside and all the guys who went had a really great time. We are really enjoying all these programs we get to do on hall with all our guys and we will be continuing to keep it up. Look for more updates to come!

Couch to 5K- by Burton Burrows

This past week, the hall started an 8 week program called Couch to 5k. Couch to 5k is a running program that was developed by Josh Clark to help inexperienced runners develop their running ability so they are ultimately able to run a 5k. We have over half the hall, including Mr. Newbauer, participating in this program and there are guys with a variety of experience levels participating. We have guys who have never run before all the way up to guys who have been running for years and are on the cross-country team, the latter of which are stepping up to act as coaches for the small groups of guys. These groups are part of the basis of the program, where there are small groups of people where the members act as motivation for the other members of their team. All of this work is going culminate in the hall running the 5k “Color Me Rad” on October 27th in Raleigh, which is a very unique 5k experience. A link to the run’s website is below if you want more info.
